Stuff We Want: Halloween Yard Decor Worth Buying (and What to Skip)

Inflatables, lights and a few hard truths about the deflated-ghost puddle on your lawn at noon.

Every October, somebody online asks the same thing: talk me out of buying Halloween decorations. And every October, the replies split into two camps. One says it's a waste, it eats your garage, and an inflatable looks like a trash bag at noon. The other says the kids on the street lose their minds over it, so who cares.

They're both right. So here's the honest version: six yard pieces we'd actually put out, plus what to skip. Half of them blow up and half of them glow, because a good yard needs both. (Want the full chaos version with a skeleton dinosaur and a crashed witch? That's our first Halloween yard decor list.)

The big three questions before you buy anything: Do you have an outlet close enough? Where will it live for the other eleven months? And can you live with it lying flat on the grass all day? Inflatables only look alive when they're plugged in, so a plug-in outdoor timer is your best friend.

1. The Black Cat That Shakes Its Head at Your Neighbors

A 6-foot black cat with a big toothy grin and a head that shakes. That little bit of motion is what makes people stop and stare. It has built-in LED lights and a waterproof fan, and it plugs in with a UL-certified adapter on a 10-foot cord. The box comes with a sandbag, ground stakes, ropes and a storage bag, which answers the "where does it go in November" question before you ask it.

2. The Ghost Who Used the Window Instead of the Door

A 4.5-foot ghost clawing its way out of your window, lit up from the inside. It's the best pick here for people with no lawn: it hangs on the house with an included suction cup and ropes, so a small porch, a townhouse or an upstairs window still gets in on the fun. It also takes up way less garage than anything that stands on the grass.

3. The Skeleton Unicorn Nobody Asked For (Everybody Wants)

Somebody looked at a unicorn and said, "What if it had died a little." This 5-foot inflatable is a pink-maned unicorn in a skeleton print holding a jack-o'-lantern bucket in its mouth. It has built-in LEDs and a blower that puffs it up in a few minutes, and it deflates small enough to put away. Is it scary? Not even a little. Will every kid on the block point at it? Absolutely.

4. The Eyes in the Bushes

Three pairs of flashing, adjustable eyes on a 9-foot light string. Tuck them into a hedge and your bushes suddenly have opinions. You can connect up to three sets end to end, and they go up in minutes with no tools. It's the best "tiny box, big reaction" item on this list. It barely takes up a shoebox of storage.

5. The Porch Light That Thinks It's a Torch

The laziest upgrade on the list, and maybe the best one. Screw these into any standard E26 socket, like your porch light or a lantern, and they flicker like real fire. There are four modes, including one that flips the flame when you hang the bulb upside down. You switch modes by flicking the light off and on. When November hits, they're just cozy fall porch lights. No storage required.

6. The Witch-Hat Ghosts Lining Your Walkway

Six little ghosts in witch hats, glowing orange, purple and green, each standing 17.7 inches tall once they're on their stakes. They're solar, so there are no cords across the yard. They turn on at dusk by themselves and work in rain. One heads-up from the listing: the panel only charges when the switch is ON, so flip it before you walk away.

Skip it if: your only outlet is on the far side of the house and you hate extension cords (stick to the eyes, the bulbs and the solar ghosts). Skip the big inflatables if your yard gets real wind or your HOA has opinions. And skip anything you don't have a shelf for. Decor that lives in a damp garage pile doesn't make it to next year.

Buy now or wait for clearance? Post-Halloween clearance is real, but the fun stuff sells out first, and you only get one October. Buy the piece you're excited about now. Grab the boring extras, like extension cords and timers, after the 31st.

The verdict: one inflatable with personality, one thing that glows, and one easy trick at the door beats a yard full of random stuff. Pick a cat, a ghost or a unicorn, light the path, flame the porch, and put eyes in the bushes. That's a yard people slow down for.
