There are two kinds of Halloween yards. There's the one with a single sad pumpkin on the porch step, slowly caving in like it's also tired of this year. And there's the one where cars roll by at four miles an hour, a kid in the back seat is pointing, and somebody's dad is pretending he isn't also looking.
You want to be the second yard. We want you to be the second yard. So here are six pieces of Halloween yard decor that get the job done, ranked loosely from "visible from space" to "wait, is that a flamingo?"
1. The 8-Foot Glowing Skeleton Dinosaur

Nothing says "we have given up on subtlety" like an 8-foot glowing skeleton dinosaur hugging a jack-o'-lantern. It has built-in swirling LED lights and a built-in air pump, so you plug it in and it puffs up in a few minutes. It also comes with ground stakes, tie-down ropes and built-in sandbags, so it won't end up in somebody else's yard at 2 AM. Is a dinosaur technically scary? No. Is anyone driving past it without slowing down? Also no.
2. The Witch Who Took the Turn Too Fast

Every neighborhood needs a cautionary tale, and this is yours: a 56-inch witch who clearly took the turn too fast. She's face-first into your tree in bright orange hair, purple gloves, striped stockings and red high heels, which is honestly how most of us would look after a Friday night on a broom. She's made of weather-tough polyester, comes with pre-attached hooks, and goes up without tools. Skid marks not included.
3. The Skeleton Who Lives Here Now

A 5.6-foot skeleton whose joints actually hold a pose, jaw included. That's the whole trick, and it's a great trick. Sit him in a lawn chair with a coffee mug. Have him wave at cars. Have him "mow" the lawn at 9 PM. Every time you re-pose him, the neighbors have to slow down to figure out what he's up to now. Some assembly required, so budget ten minutes and one "wait, where does this bone go?"
4. The Guy Climbing Out of Your Lawn

A skull, two arms and two legs on twist-lock stakes, arranged so it looks like somebody is clawing their way out of your lawn. It's the most "I didn't try that hard" decoration that looks like you tried really hard. Put it by the walkway and watch trick-or-treaters speed-walk past it with the dignity of a startled cat. It's weather-resistant plastic, so a rainy October won't ruin the vibe. The rest of the skeleton is presumably stuck in traffic.
5. The Haunted Hot Dog

A 24-inch posable wiener dog skeleton. It's a hot dog, but make it haunted. Pose it sniffing the groundbreaker, begging at the lawn chair, or mid-zoomies across the grass. It's all-weather plastic, and it will never bark at the mail carrier, which already makes it better behaved than most dogs on your street.
6. The Flamingo That Has Seen Things

Your lawn flamingo finally hit its "what's even the point" phase. This one is 27.6 inches of bone-white plastic with a posable neck and wings, so it can strut, stalk or crawl through your bushes like it has unfinished business. Leave it up after Halloween and call it "tropical goth." Nobody will argue. They'll just slow down.
How to stack it: put the dinosaur where headlights hit it first. Hang the witch on the tree closest to the street. Then build a little scene on the lawn: the groundbreaker by the path, the skeleton in a chair, the wiener dog "helping," and the flamingo in the bushes, judging everyone. That's a story, and stories make people brake.
The verdict: one sad pumpkin is a decoration. A dinosaur, a crashed witch, and a skeleton dog walking past a flamingo is an event. Be the event.
